Dear Twitter people
or just people new to Tumblr
I think I just hit on what some of the confusion here is.
When we say tumblr is not a social media website we do mean that. socializing is OPTIONAL.
I know you're used to performing and getting attention. You're used to your interaction with the world depending on something outside of yourself and doing what you can to meet it.
Tumblr is the opposite.
Your blog, the blogs you follow, the tags you use EVERYTHING is for YOUR use.
When you come here you have to focus on yourself to "get anywhere" or navigate around.
IF you don't know this yet, you can make what are called "Side blogs" and many of us have those, under your icon on the right hand side. You can make as many as you want. Some of us treat them like they have a particular goal but the truth is that we treat them more like ... personal folders.
Or at least I do, I don't necessarily make a side blog to perform a certain way I use it to corral a certain interest that doesn't necessarily need to be on my main blog.
I'm not trying to reach an audience.
If I do great if not its no big deal, its not the point. I made that blog FOR ME. To make a certain interest easier for me to find or to look at.
And thats really how you should treat your own experience here.
We need to know you're not a bot when you follow us but we're not asking you to put on a performance, we just want to see you act like a real human even of that means being a "lurker"
Even lurkers will use a photo they took or an icon someone made as theri profile pic and put that they're just lurking or that their into a certain fandom in their "bio" and thats it!
Just "hey I'm here look up X ship" or "fuck this fuck that fuck everyone leave me alone" or " 'some quote from a book or celebrity you really like'" and a picture of a color of a color for a pfp.
If you don't want to get blocked we are genuinely asking you to BE YOURSELF. FOCUS ON YOU! Let the inspiration for your experience here be yourself instead of other people.

Tumblr would literally rather arbitrarily delete the accounts of trans women on this site with uncharacteristic amounts of speed than address even one genuine instance of harassment. They've already lost one harassment lawsuit and they immediately decided it was more worth their time to continue on the exact same path. They KNOW what they're doing. With staff like this, the only way to see genuine change on this site is going to be to make it more of a problem for them to not address this issue.

everyone calling reddit social media is wrong
it's a forum and message board platform not social media at least not in the same vain as other social media sites it doesn't work like twitter or instagram or tiktok
and I think this is why everyone on tumblr is more accepting of their refugees and not twitters (besides the twitter refugees bringing old discourse back)
because tumblr is also not what social media is thought of nowadays it's a blogging platform. both tumblr and reddit are similar in that they both reflect the internet of old, when forums and blogs and personal websites were more popular, a time when you didn't post about every little thing in your life, when you could be anonymous
and no matter how hard the ceos or the staff of either websites may try they can never fully transform into the next twitter or whatever without fundamentally changing what these websites are. which would be a death sentence
people aren't coming to these websites for social media, they're coming for the community, for the uniqueness, for the long discussions they can have without a character limit, for information, for anonymity. to browse the internet without feeling pressured into posting perfectly fake photos and stories about your life in a desperate attempt for likes and attention

An interesting observation I need to report to you all from when I was out touching grass last month (hiking/camping): People in the real world seem to consistently react to me saying that tumblr is my primary social media by going "Isn't that a dating app????"

honestly kinda sad about the whole tumblr communities thing
like it's cool it's fun but imo it just unnecessarily divides content by having it be One Or The Other. now if you want to look at all the art a person's posted on tumblr, including doodles, you just don't have one place to do that. quick offhand thoughts are no longer available on a person's main blog with the rest of their earlier posts, they're arbitrarily hidden off to the side.
and even worse than being split off, communities are (as of yet) not searchable at all, so anything other than recent posts just gets... lost
you can reblog regular posts to communities but then, yet again, discussion on the post is cut up into two places. you can't see any of the community's comments if you're on the main post, not even as the post creator and not even if you're in that community. idk i really prefer the regular tag browsing system
huge props to the people moderating these things, yall are really awesome, it's just qualms i have with the feature in general

I think it's so tired and played out, the growing genre of tumblr posts that are like "yeah I don't have tiktok (hair twirling) (brag) (proud of myself)" like I need yall to understand it's just an app. and I know that we're all getting old. I'm turning 51 this month. but you SAID you wouldn't do this whole "disregard whatever the Young People are doing once you become an adult" thing and now you're totally 100% doing it. "it's toxic" so is tumblr and twitter! "there's censorship" just like tumblr and twitter! "I don't like this-and-this trend" you literally follow people you wanna follow and shape your own algorithm. and your tumblr reblogs are FULL OF TIKTOK REPOSTS. you love tiktok. they are just videos. having or not having an app is not a personality trait!!

i didn’t think this was something i would have to say on this blog but: if you voted for trump, if you’re glad that trump won, or even if you’re indifferent to trump winning, you can fucking unfollow me now and also go fucking die, thanks <3

I keep trying to add tumblr-style tags under my posts on places that aren't tumblr.
Other social media sites are really missing out on the ability to add little footnotes to your posts and shares that aren't part of the "main" text.
